AFM believe that knowing you are dealing with an environmentally responsible organisation is important when making purchasing decisions. We are always looking for ways to reduce the impact of our work on the environment and we are working hard to minimise our carbon footprint. Our goal is to become carbon neutral as soon as possible.

What Is A Carbon Footprint?

A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact an organisation's activities have on the environment and, in particular, climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels to supply electricity, heating, manufactured goods, transportation etc.

A carbon footprint is made up of the sum of two parts:

1. The primary (direct) footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels including energy consumption and transportation: powering equipment, heating, lighting, private and public transport, food and drink, flights, etc.
2. The secondary (indirect) footprint is a measure of the indirect carbon dioxide emissions from the whole lifecycle of products and services we use - those associated with their manufacture and eventual breakdown. To put it very simply - the more we buy the more emissions will be caused on our behalf.

What AFM Are Doing About Our Carbon Footprint

1. Calculate

AFM have taken the time to calculate our carbon footprint. This is the first step in reducing our impact on the environment. If you want help calculating your own carbon footprint then try starting with the free calculator available at actonco2.direct.gov.uk.

2. Reduce

AFM have reviewed all our practices in an effort to minimise our carbon footprint. Some examples of simple carbon reduction strategies include:

• Recycling and using products made from recycled materials.
• Using second hand furniture in our office whenever possible.
• Minimising our power usage, for example turning off and unplugging equipment not in use.
• Reducing the use of resources such as avoiding printing documents unless necessary, using natural light rather than electricity when possible, using rechargeable batteries.
• Limiting Travel by avoiding unnecessary meetings, using public transport when practical, car pooling, walking or cycling.
• Appointing an environmental representative to ensure AFM continue to develop best environmental practice.

3. Offset

Carbon offsetting - There are times when carbon emissions have been brought to their absolute minimum but cannot be eliminated. This is where carbon offsetting comes in. Having actively reduced our carbon emissions we have now begun offsetting unavoidable carbon emissions through Climatecare. Visit www.climatecare.org for more information.

Why Don’t You Join Us?

AFM offers you the opportunity to offset the carbon footprint from the work we do for you. Just tell us you want to make your project with us carbon neutral. We will add £3 to your invoice and match it with £3 from us, all of which will be passed on directly to Climatecare. At the end of each year we will pay for any remaining carbon offset still owed.
